When I was a child, I use to look up to the sky and search the clouds for shapes. I use to look for things like the shape of a dog, a cat, and sometimes I’d even look for a face. It was a lot of fun when I was a child, and it was something I could do with my friends and even my family. But as I got older, and I started to look down at the objects and buildings around me, instead of those clouds, I saw that some things could look like completely different things. Just like clouds, other objects can take the form of something familiar, every now and we’ll see things that aren’t really there, like a face on a car, or a frog in the foam of our hot chocolate. These things just happen and it’s not because we’re going crazy.
What causes us to recognize certain things in some objects is called pareidolia. It’s a phenomenon that happens when our brains are tricked into perceiving familiar patterns or shapes where they don’t actually exists. The best example is finding faces and shapes in cloud and shadows. It can be a very misleading but often hilarious illusion.
